RP Post: Waterin’ Flowers

Cassidy stood in the middle of the garden like a very serious bee—her yellow dress swaying in the breeze, her tiny braids bouncing against her shoulders, and her arms wrapped tightly around the handle of a metal watering can that felt about five times heavier than she expected. It tilted forward in her grip with a little slosh of water, just enough to make her knees wobble and her lips press together in determined silence.

The bluebells were waiting.

They were Cassidy’s favorite this week—bright and soft and shaped like little hats for fairies, drooping over in gentle curls. They bloomed in a quiet corner of her momma’s friend’s garden, surrounded by all kinds of other flowers, pink and purple and orange and white, bursting up from the grass like someone had taken a giant paintbrush and swept rainbows across the ground. Cassidy liked that idea. Rainbow grass.

The can wobbled again. She braced her feet. Water sprinkled from the spout in a silvery stream, catching sunlight like glitter as it landed across the bluebells. Cassidy didn’t talk while she worked—her arms were too busy, and the job too important. She wanted to make sure every single flower had a drink. Even the little ones way in the back. They were growing tall, just like they were supposed to. Just like she was.
