RP Post: Well, I tried…

The kitchen smelled like cinnamon and icing sugar, with soft music playing in the corner and the tree lights glowing through the window. Cassidy stood on her booster stand at the island, her little hands sticky with frosting and cookie crumbs.

She had worked so carefully, one gumdrop at a time, pressing them along the roof of her gingerbread house. But now it was all in pieces, a lopsided wall, a broken candy cane fence, a roof that slid right off and crumbled into a pile. The frosting was everywhere. Even in her hair. Her lip wobbled, and she pressed her mouth into a tight line, trying not to cry.

Momma didn’t get mad. She just kissed the top of Cassidy’s head and said, “Well, sugar, sometimes even the sweetest things fall down.”
Cassidy nodded slowly, her chest still heavy.

But after a little while, when the frosting on her fingers started to dry, she picked up a gumdrop and popped it into her mouth.
Falling down wasn’t fun.
But at least it still tasted good.
