RP Post: Happy Litha!
The backyard was all dressed up for Litha, wearing the colors of the sun. Gold and honey and soft bright whites were everywhere. Balloons were tied to fence posts, the sunflowers leaned happily toward the fire pit, and the air smelled like roasted chicken, lemon cake, and the sweet honey rolls Cassidy liked best. Grown-ups danced in the middle of the yard with their hands clapping and their feet stomping to the music. Guitars and drums kept the beat like a friendly heartbeat.
Cassidy wasn’t in the middle of all that. She didn’t need to be.
She found her own little patch of grass, tucked safely away from the busy, from the loud, from the fast. Her black dress, fancy with monarch butterflies along the neckline, twirled out like soft wings when she spun. Round and round she went, not quite dancing like the others, but spinning, her arms stretched wide and the flower crown on her head tilting just a little. She got dizzy pretty quick, but that was part of the fun. When her feet tangled up and her knees found the grass, she just giggled, rolled over like a pill bug, and stood right back up to spin the other way.
Maybe the music wasn’t waiting for her.
Maybe it would keep playing, drums thumping and guitar strings humming, whether she spun or sat or stood still.
But Cassidy liked to think the song was watching her anyway.
Just in case she spun so good she might lift right off the ground.
