RP Post: Little Songs with One Finger

Cassidy stood carefully on the piano bench, her toes curled just a little on the edge of the cushion as she leaned forward. The piano stretched out in front of her like a big black-and-white secret—long, smooth, and full of quiet possibilities.

One finger at a time, she pressed down the keys. Softly. Gently. No more banging. Everyone had said it before—when you bang, it’s not music, it’s just noise. But now? Now it was different. Now it was almost a song.

The notes came out slow and curious, one by one, like raindrops falling in a pattern only she could hear. She didn’t know what the notes meant or how they went together, not yet. And the music paper on the stand—with all its strange little dots and sticks—still looked like a secret code.

But the piano didn’t mind that she didn’t understand.

It sang back to her anyway.

And Cassidy smiled, already imagining the day she’d know how to make the piano sing real songs.
